When we were developing the fourth installment of the ARPG series, we wanted to create something not only unique in its own right but also

something we could really call “our own.” In our opinion, we think we may have finally achieved that goal.

With Games of the Generation there had been too many different games that were trying to be ARPGs, and we definitely wanted something that felt different. With Agarest, we had created a story that revolved around one character who was not a “generic” type of character; rather, he had his own distinct personality and play style. In contrast, while there was no character you could play in Agarest; it was a story about people in the world, and as such, had a rather serious tone.

In contrast, I think the Elden Ring has more of a general RPG feel to it, similar to games like Ragnarok Online and Final Fantasy Tactics. However, the decision to develop a new IP and not simply take this title and change up the graphics and art style may have been the right one to make. With respect to the storyline; it was rather simple, but it was a plot that developed in layers, and each of the three main areas of the game provided the player with different challenges and plot points to experience as he or she played through the game. There were a few unexpected twists along the way, and while they were predictable, they were perhaps the best kind. I think that having this kind of plot structure and avoiding too many plot points that had been seen before was a rather fresh approach to storytelling. Overall, there was a definite sense that the game had been written with the player’s interest in mind, and everything we did was done with the player’s story in mind. And that’s what we think we achieved.

When it came time to design the game, the main concept was to have a fantasy ARPG. I know that this wasn’t the first time we’d created a fantasy ARPG, but perhaps something was lacking in what we had released previously. It was great for us to have all three of the members of the Agarest team writing parts of the story. We also had the art direction that our art director, Motohiro Shibuya,
