INTRODUCTION

For over a decade, Dr. R.I. Morris, in collaboration with various editors, assembled and presented a series of monographs on individual countries and regions of the world. Each volume has a companion volume of history with more detailed and more specific coverage of the same region of the world.

In those monographs, Dr. Morris and the editors chose to focus on the traditional narratives, myths, beliefs, and tales which are the basic underlying source for understanding the place and the people in the societies of the traditional cultures of the various peoples of the world. While there is no need to reproduce in this volume the vast and fascinating array of information concerning the traditional peoples of the world in the companion volumes, there is a need to show the unique character of their narratives. These stories focus on the things that happen in the lives of the people, and for this reason, they are not the official histories of these regions, and their accounts of those events that are of historical importance vary greatly.

To help in making the book accessible, the stories have been presented in chronological order by country, with the original languages of the stories for each country. Also included in this volume are bibliographies of the major works on the traditions of the peoples of the world, together with a list of the countries and cultures covered in the book. This book is an outgrowth of the work presented in the earlier monographs.

The following pages contain the traditional narratives of a number of the peoples of the world which are included in this volume, with the stories arranged in the countries in which they are found. As in the earlier volumes, the stories are presented as if told to a child. The stories are designed to bring the child’s perception of the world to life in a way that will enable him or her to understand the world. The purpose is not to persuade the child that the world in these stories is the way it actually is, but to bring to life the stories of the cultures as they were intended to be told. The narratives are condensed and simplified, so that the children can understand the basic concepts and be able to participate in these lively and colorful stories.
