this reticence to consider how a pack dynamics works and how the relationships inter-relate comes from the fact that the player can only ever interact with the cubs and not with the entire pack. packs of wolves are not sims, so some hidden subtleties are lost. theyre also a very different beast from wolves to humans, as i discovered when playing as a cub. one of the main features of the wolves model is the survival instincts that are activated when a cub loses its pack. when you change packs in the game, it will still trigger these instincts. this is usually a good thing but the pack remaining in-check explains why i felt so at ease for most of the game, even when being told to watch out for a dangerous new pack. theres just a couple packs on the map to keep an eye on at a time, but theyre out of sight, out of mind. all the fighting is going on in the woods. i know that ive been protected because i havent been shot at. theres been plenty of skirmishes and clashes to keep my attention, but it misses the point that i should be paying closer attention to the main story.
i also feel that theres been a lot of inconsistencies in my character progression, and i feel that the developers felt rushed. i started with the same rifle i left the game with and there have been a couple times where theyve made me use a different one. they’ve also made me start with a pistol instead of rifle for no reason. i started out with a plain outfit (obvious flaws) and i should have been able to get the best possible items by the end of the game. i mean, theres a sniper rifle in the game, but i cant find it without cheating. it doesnt even save to the cloud so that i can use it later. the scientists really screwed up on something.
cubs have a bevy of movement options (walk, run, jump, leap, dash), but only two abilities. they can pull a trigger on you to attack enemies, and they also make critters carrying foods and a few other objects light up onscreen for a moment, which can be used to break apart a bear or wolf.
theres also a shield/defensive ability that can be used to block attacks, and a little counter that goes into a gauge after each move. obviously those last two only make sense when theres a threat to be neutralised.
looting is rarely necessary, as a last-ditch effort. if you can safely leap onto a wolf, who will pop out of the bush to attack you, then a cub can zap you with a beeline attack to put you out of your misery. many prey will be lazing nearby, and once its grabbed it’s a quick sprint to the food, but if theres no food here then there’s no point. after a few wolves were lazing about, theres a rare instance where a lone wolf snuck up and leapt, and using its hooked tail to grab it and power dash, i managed to kill it from a back-to-back attack without it being able to do anything. even this was rare, as most animals (bears, wolves and some deer) were in too close to be dangerous to jump upon.
hunting in a hurry does feel like your done for, but its a true rarity. youll know to collect food items as theres an enemy because of a light glowing around it, but trying to reach it feels like reaching the end of a litre of gas. as you near the item, youll teleport to it so you can use it, but there’s no way to pause the game mid-jump. theres no room to carry even a small amount of food while a beeline attack in an opponent, so handling anything bigger than a cracker is almost impractical.
