mercury can be a boss in your group, though people who know more will tell you she is all but unstoppable. she has access to the following spells:
- immortal mist (c) : heals 10 hit points. (1 hr. duration)
- evil eye (c) : when this spell is used for the first time, it deals 5 points of life damage to the targeted player. (2 hr. duration) (this effect cannot be cancelled)
- hermetic identity (c) : the targeted player creates a new persona, which last until the start of the next round. duration)
- phantasmal bone (a) : the targeted player casts a phantasmal bone, dealing 8 points of damage to all other players. (3 hr. duration)
the hermes-thoth in gold edition is a hermetic order of the golden dawn lead by a revived mercury, while still teaching the ways of magic and mystery. he pursues a quest to revitalize the modern hermetic magical society and to teach the citizens of tamriel the ways of magic. he has become a patron of life while still being able to take down the undead.
mercury has an important quality to his reputation as a mage, which is that he is not afraid to speak his mind. he may curse, he may insult, he may be sarcastic. he speaks his mind, and people listen to him. he is a powerful mage, but he’s no masochist. he’s really good at what he does, but he’s not above learning something new. he’s always been a worrier, but after many years of worrying about things, he’s learned to worry much less. he is certainly a leader among his peers, yet his demeanour is humble. his character is not particularly pretty to look at, but he does a good job of keeping up appearances, while leading his people in power towards a brighter future. if you are considering joining the order, you should hope to meet with mercury.
if you get a “searching” icon, bring a letter or spell scroll from one of your library wards. you will be able to see the effect of the spell you are using on the npc indicated by the button. a target of the spell must be in range and wearing or carrying some kind of the spell’s description (eg. a scroll of fireball requires fireball to be cast). a target of the spell must also either be visible to you or be a stealthed target.
trap sense can be used to negate the effects of any spells that have “trickery” on them. the spell’s description will say something about it having the requirement of line of sight. trap sense will give you an icon informing you of this.
a fireball spell with the “slow” spell option leaves a rock on the floor for 0.3 seconds and slows movement by 50% and causes movement in the new direction to be slowed for 0.3 seconds. a waterbolts spell with the “slow” spell option leaves a small aqueduct on the floor for 0. this is useful if you have a rogue mage type.
if you have the find the imp icon, a dm will typically provide you with the information you need to locate the npc you are looking for. as a dm, i like to provide adventurers with access to the library, allowing them to expand the environment and forge their own adventures based on their discoveries. if i don’t, i encourage my players to go to town. the local temple may have a person in the library who can offer advice.
once you have your enchantments set up, you can commit to an attack strategy using various methods. each time you go to an encampment, you have a choice of two ways to attack. if your character has the sneak ability, you can disable a sentry and attack with that. if you do not have sneak, you can attack and then execute, which is a lot more deadly, though it may not work as well as a sneak on an encampment where your character is also not equipped with the sneak icon. you can also choose to attack with your equipment or to use the sneak attack perk, which is not a good idea if you have your equipment equipped on you and have not raised your sneak skill to 100% yet, as the +3% damage done is mitigated by the penalty. another way to use chameleon is the most effectively to add an aura of chameleon to an attack. if you do this, you will have a delay to evade that will trigger each of the next 3 attacks in the melee, and you will be able to use chameleon as a dodge move. this can be done with damage health 100 in 50 ft, if you have enough gold for the 500 + 50 ft effect. this works well with any long-duration spell that adds a 50 ft area effect to the affected target, as they will all trigger whenever you use chameleon. note: you cannot use 50 ft chameleon in a mount, as it will immediately cause you to get ejected! this is a well-known exploit that has been detailed in previous patches, unfortunately, and i cannot find any way to avoid this problem. if you want to use short duration buffs and chameleon on mounts, you have to fill your well or an upgrade to 100 mercantile.
