Once the WPA/WPA2 packet has been decrypted, it can be monitored using Wireshark. It contains a lot of interesting information which can be used to fingerprint the default WPA/WPA2 key used by the router, paving the way for the compromise of the router.

With the stkeys attack, the attacker has to create an extra (small) Wi-Fi network and connect the phones to it. The attacker can also disable the default and/or alternative Wi-Fi networks. Since the attacker already has control over the default Wi-Fi network, he can automate the creation of the Wi-Fi network that needs to be cracked using an SSH connection from the target phone.

This attack relies on the default encryption key being set to something that can be brute-forced. Since the encryption keys for older Wi-Fi Protected Access protocols are usually (and widely advertised as) being set to the same 32-bit hash of the serial number of the device, the stkeys attack can only be used to crack Cisco devices as the Cisco series of 5510 G3 routers appear to suffer from a certain APIC bug that renders the serial number inaccessible.

In case of the newer series of routers, the attack succeeds, although the encryption key can be easily guessed in most cases. In case of the older series of routers, we can only surmise that the serial number is indeed not hashable through some kind of CPU bug.
