though it was not intended to be a direct sequel to the darkstalkers series (a controversial fact on its own), the character’s appearance provided many tekken fans with an opening to address the playerbase. the character name, balrog, was a homonym for “hardshock.” already the name balrog itself was a long-standing fan-favorite and, with a past as a boxer from a relatively poor background, looked to be willing to brawl at the drop of a hat. most of tekken’s heroes were both wealthy and powerful, so to have a character who was distinctly poor yet had had such a profound influence on the world of fight was the perfect trojan horse.
the character’s game still debuted with a few issues: 1) balrog’s very first appearance ended with his walking off stage. 2) balrog had a crying face and emotes that were all goofy. many felt like this was a missed opportunity for proper character development. 3) balrog’s boxing gloves were the only other things wrong with the reveal besides his true gender. this was a very contentious issue among fans because of the confusion caused by showing a character without the proper attire for his character. at the time of release, tekken players took to the forums to complain how the character’s costume was his team colors (purple) rather than the official character colors, a blatant trademark violation. 4) balrog’s shoryuken transformation animation went from having the mech do a full 360-rotation to simply having the mech spin in place for a few seconds. this caused many to believe that it was a firework effect meant to look like a transformation, and not a legitimate movement. i am not sure if this was a planning error or a result of the development.
there are a few noteworthy characters here. christie is a newcomer to the series, and i have always been a fan of her. she is a long time sf fan, and has held a spot in my heart for a long time. though they are not included in the main game, christie appears in both the fight stick and ps3 starter pack dlc along with lei. christie is a great addition to the street fighter cast, and is one of the hardest to solo out of the cast. though christie can be tricky, you can usually get by with a few strings of button mashing and luck. being a character with a fast recovery, i feel like i get my fair share of blocks with her. christie is a very lethal character, and if i were to tip the scale to her though, she would probably be the one that i like the most from the dlc pack.
so we have our main four characters, but what about the other characters? as far as tekken is concerned, most of the characters that were included are from the ps1 and ps2 era of the game. im a big fan of the development of the characters over the years, so i am a bit indifferent to the characters that make up the dlc pack. if the pack were for the game itself, then i would be happy to see all of the characters from the game.
so, if you are an sf fan, you will love the additions to the roster, but if you have not played a tekken in a while, you might be left a bit disappointed. however, if you are a tekken fan and a street fighter fan, you might want to pick up this pack. while i would not go so far as to say that this dlc pack is worth a purchase, i do feel that with the addition of the three kai characters, it could help attract more players to the tekken series. for those of you that dont know, the kai is the chairman of the organization shadaloo. he is the father of the two chipps. the kai also appears in tekken x street fighter. the addition of these characters could help the tekken series get a small bump in popularity.
