the guidelines on the rules in the book generally feel well-balanced and interesting, with only minor flaws. however, there is one thing i dislike, that is the tendency to use the terms “fast” and “slow” as a way to describe play. it is irritating and makes no sense to me, at least not in the context of this game. “fast” and “slow” are the terms for a character playing a lot of or a little, respectively. for a group, this would be the opposite. thus, for example, a player playing “slow” would be trying to master the rules, instead of just playing the game. the terms also don’t make sense in the context of some other areas of the game, such as how your character will die.
the book comes with two scenarios, the “doomed city” and “purging the hounds”. the former is a fairly generic campaign set in the modern day, while the latter is a classic v:tm campaign with the setting of the movie. i find the scenarios interesting, but not much of a stretch. i’d rather see more original v:tm stuff, but at least they provide you with a good base to build off of.
the vast majority of the rules are relevant, and feel fresh. however, it is necessary to state that the rules in the book can be somewhat tricky to understand. this is because they are written in a way that emphasizes very specific rules, and does not provide a lot of context. there are some excellent examples of the process behind the creation of v:tm, but i’d say that the book as a whole doesn’t do a very good job at providing the necessary context.
the book is actually a great addition to the 5th edition, and i think it is better than some of the core books i have seen. it is a shame it doesn’t provide more context, as some of the information is very helpful to the storyteller running the game. however, i can see its still a good supplement, especially since it gives the storyteller more tools for character creation.
