The present invention relates generally to communication networks, and more particularly, to a method and system for improving the utilization of resources in a wireless communication network.
2. Description of the Related Art
Communication networks transfer information between devices within the networks. For example, in a wireless communication network, information is transferred over a radio frequency (RF) air interface between one or more base stations and wireless terminals in the network. The signals being transmitted and received through the RF air interface between the base station and a wireless terminal are known as a communications link.
For each communications link in the network, the quality of the communications link is measured by various metrics. For example, the link quality of a communications link is measured by the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the communications link. The SNR is the ratio of the signal power to the noise power in the communications link.
When a plurality of communications links are present, the SNR of a communications link is usually estimated using both the signal power and the noise power. A typical link quality estimator calculates the SNR of each communications link by measuring the signal power of each communications link and the noise power of the communications link. When calculating the SNR of a communications link, the SNR of the communications link is a function of the average signal-to-noise ratio (ASNR) of the communications link, as shown in Equation (1) below.i=10 log(AsNR/Ii+Ii) (1)
In Equation (1), i is the SNR of a communications link, AsNR is the SNR of the communications link averaged over the transmission of the communications link, and Ii and Ii+ are the signal and noise powers of the communications link respectively.
In wireless communication networks, links between a single base station and wireless terminals in the network are often referred to as serving links. Communication links between two different base stations are usually referred to as backhaul links. Communication links between a base station and a wireless terminal in one cell and communication links between a base station and a wireless terminal in a cell adjacent to the cell in which the terminal is located are typically referred to as neighbor links.
