the vivekachudamani is a perfect guide to the vedanta path. it is a compendium of 580 verses of the most sublime wisdom. it is a guide to the experience of the self, which is the ultimate goal of human existence.
the subject of the book is the same word vivek or discrimination. but the subtle difference in the explanation is important. while the word vivek in the sanskrit text is very precise and refers to cognition and understanding, the word vivek in the commentary is much broader and refers to the knowledge gained through all the five senses and the mind. the unique contribution of vivekachudamani was to make the former definition popular and accessible in the modern world, so that the later definition could also take in the sublimation of spiritual knowledge and the illumination of the heart.
though there are no doubt other works on this subject, the volume vivekachudamani has its own significance. the first edition of this work was published in 1960 under the direction of swami chinmayananda, who also edited the book. he shared his vision of vivekachudamani with us in 1957 and in the years that followed we were instrumental in bringing out a number of books and some scholarly works on vivekachudamani.
swami chinmayananda in his own words: i wrote this book to show how the three great disciplines of philosophy, religion, and science could be brought together to show how reality was one and why one had to learn the method of discrimination to understand this. i intended this book to show how a person could put the vedas into practice to fulfill his life and how a person could see the lord as god in himself or in another. i intended this book to show how one could live in the world and how one could know the truth of the soul that is independent of the body. i intended to show how a person could understand the vedas without a study of sanskrit. i intended to show how a person could see the all pervading brahman, the absolute truth, directly through his senses. i intended to show how a person could understand the vedas through his own individual experience, if he had one, and how a person could develop his knowledge by analyzing the vedas. i intended to show how a person could understand the vedas through philosophy and through the awareness that one could develop and see the truth through one’s own individual experience.
