i can’t get either of my computers to boot up. the one that was set up for sp3 and the other without sp3. any ideas? it’s been over two days since i downloaded sp3 and the windows updates, and the computers are still not booting up. both of the computers are dell optiplex gx620. one has sp3, one has just the normal vista
i have only ever seen two other reports from people who had problems with installing sp3 on a dell optiplex. both of these reports were from people who had it done by a 3rd party. i did not have a problem with either of my computers. both of my computers booted up fine, both had no problems with the windows updates, and both had no problems with sp3. i have done this installation several times myself. the only thing that has ever caused problems with this installation is either an outdated driver, or the driver that was listed in device manager not being updated in time. also, the problem that caused the earlier report from john zukowski was fixed in the sp3 update.
i downloaded sp3 and the windows updates on my laptop yesterday and after installing sp3, windows would not boot up and i had to run a restore point and then boot normally. when i booted normally, i got the following message:
we have multiple windows xp computers in our office and we had problems with 3 of them not loading drivers for their hard drives as well as one that had issues with the keyboard. i finally got them to work properly after many hours of troubleshooting. there were 2 of the hard drives that i finally could not get the device manager to list the drivers for. it just would not load. i would use the device manager and get the message “windows cannot load the specified device driver”. i did what i could to get these device drivers to load but it just would not happen. on the third one i finally got the the device manager to list the drivers. i found the specific device drivers that i needed and downloaded them. i went back to the other 2 to remove the drivers and all of a sudden the device manager would open normally and show the drives that i needed. then i proceeded to load the drivers on the other two. in all 3 cases i downloaded the windows install disc, ran it, chose “repair” and the hard drive was fixed. i will take a guess that the solution for these 3 devices might be the same.
