To encourage students to think critically about research, I assign a literature review in my class, and I break it into manageable pieces for the students before the final product of an 8 10 page paper that makes use of a minimum of 8 empirical articles from peer-reviewed journals (no Wikipedia or websites allowed). A component that I have found essential to learning how to develop a logical argument is a very detailed outline. The goal of the literature review is to encourage critical thinking about a topic and develop an argument that requires students to use data to reach their own conclusions about a question. An outline helps them to structure an argument and find holes in their thinking.

But I have not given students the chance to apply their knowledge in the form of an outline. Perhaps I have not given enough weight to the value of a rigorous and focused means to develop students’ critical thinking. Perhaps I haven’t given students enough credit. I’m going to give them the opportunity to demonstrate their thinking and I’m going to give them the chance to develop their ability to engage with experts in their field. I am creating a series of thought experiments in which students are asked to demonstrate their mastery of the knowledge, skills, and habits of the discipline. Students will also develop an outline of their own that will guide future studies. They will not take the whole class to write outlines, but they will be asked to write an outline in response to a set of prompts. In the future, they will be required to use their outlines to explain their thinking and write an argument for and against a theory, a position, a generalization, a hypothesis, or a fact. In short, I want my students to think in the same way that experts think. That is, I want them to write really well.
