it is much more important to get the output of your fitting correct than it is to obtain the fitting parameters. fig. 6 shows the difference between a good fit and a bad fit. a small shift in the satellite peak position may not be noticed by the eye, but it can result in a large shift in the area of a peak. to get an idea of how important this is, consider that a shift of the satellite peak position of about 0.2 ev would move the peak to a position that would have been called an emission feature. this is probably not what you want to see in a peak that you have assigned to a sp-hybridized c-c bond.

nists simulation of electron spectra for surface analysis (sessa) is a great tool for simulating your aes xps spectra. samples can be configured in multiple ways: multilayers, islands, wires, spheres on substrates. you can specify the composition of your material, specify peak positions based on reference data from similar compounds, and the operating parameters of the spectrometer. the simulated data can then be compared against the acquired data.
a doublet is a peak with two components, a main peak and a satellite peak. the intensity of the satellite peak is lower than the main peak. the voigt function is a combination of gaussian and lorentz functions.
however, the peak shape is only the tip of the iceberg. this is because xps data usually contains sidebands and satellite peaks. these secondary peaks are due to auger and/or shake-up processes. as these processes are often not well understood, one can fit xps data with multiple peak shapes. one example of this is the lorentz function which consists of two gaussians and a lorentzian. another example is the breit-wigner shape which consists of a peak, a shoulder, and a tail. the latter is used to describe the auger and shake-up sidebands. the number of peaks, the areas of the peaks, the widths of the peaks, the intensities of the sidebands, the height of the main peak, the separation between the sidebands, and many other parameters of the peaks can be fitted.
the best fit option shows the best fit of the peak shapes. the fitted area option shows the area of the peak. the error shows the deviation of the data from the fit. the concordance is a statistical measure of the goodness of the fit.
