Woodcut and xylograph are closely related and more or less subjective terms. There’s a big difference between the old, hand-drawn woodcuts, and the lino cuts, hand engraved plates and even the photo-engraved ones. In this case, the “classic” art term “xylography” (which also means “woodcut” or “wood engraving”) is used. Woodcut is a method for the reproduction of a woodblock, which has been carved for printing. The original woodblock is engraved with ink, the piece is inked and then mounted on paper with a wax based substance. This allows the colors from the original woodblock to be transferred to the paper. With the advent of screen printing, woodcut was a slow process, but it still remains popular today.

The term’stamping’ refers to using specialized engraving tools, called’stamens’, to transfer an impression from a metal plate into a substrate. The most common flat surface in use today is the printing press. These plates are usually made of copper and are engraved in a metal stamping device. With this equipment, an impression is applied to the metal plate, and then another imprint on the product. The impression can then be cured in a solution of ammonia and water. After this, a thin layer of wax is applied to make it easier to print. On paper, the impression is diluted with water and the wax removed, leaving only a wax image.

The interface allows you to choose between three line modes: 1) screen line mode, 2) woodcut / gravure mode 3) woodcut/gravure mode with area fills. You can also choose between the three main effects modes: “usual”, “conical” and “out-of-line”.

With Xylograph you can create many wonderful images with a single mouse click. It allows you to create lines of any width, direction, and curvature, in any density of lines and on any color.
Working with Xylograph is very simple. You can create lines with different sizes, with different orientation, with various densities and curvature by just clicking a point anywhere on the canvas. For example, you can start a line tangent to a point on the canvas, and create a line that goes parallel with a line already created.
